Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:

  • People who are 65 or older
  • Certain younger people with disabilities
  • People with end-stage renal disease (chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation, sometimes referred to as

In most cases, yes. You can go to any doctor, healthcare provider, hospital or facility that is enrolled in Medicare and accepts Medicare patients.

With some exceptions, Original Medicare does not cover most prescriptions. You can add drug coverage by joining Medicare Prescription Drug Cove-rage (Part D).

No, in Original Medicare you do not need to choose a primary care doctor.

In most of the cases, no. In Original Medicare, you don't need a referral, but the licensed agent must be enrolled in Medicare.

You may already have employer or union coverage that can pay the costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay. If not, you may want to buy a Medicare supplement insurance (Medigap) policy.

Generally, you pay a fixed amount for your health care (deductible) before Medicare pays its share. Then Medicare pays its share and you pay your share (coinsurance / copay-ment) for covered services and supplies. There is no annual limit on what you pay out of pocket.

You generally do not need to submit claims to Medicare. Providers and suppliers are required by law to submit claims for the covered services and supplies you receive. Provi-ders are doctors, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies.

Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services.

Part B covers certain physician services, outpatient health care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
